October 25, 2023

Shopping much? Welcome to the city of your dreams!

Athens has many charms. And one of the most enjoyable is definitely the endless options to shop till you drop! From alternative local fashion designers and a broad selection of vintage shops with great finds, all the way to exclusive brands and collector’s items for the big spenders, Athens is a vibrant hub for modern-day shopping enthusiasts and offers a diverse and exciting shopping experience that caters to every taste and budget. We have put together our favorite go-to spots for shopping including clothes, design objects, and, of course, food!

Traditional Markets and Bazaars

Dating back several decades, centuries even, some of the traditional markets of Athens feel like a trip back in time. You will discover exciting vintage finds, traditional pottery, handmade objects, discarded artworks, organic soaps, and beauty treatments… the list goes on. As for the vibe? It really feels like a treasure hunt!

Monastiraki Flea Market

You will find literally everything here. From rare antiques and stunning etchings to kitsch souvenirs and rare books. Right outside the metro of Monastiraki Square, you will instantly see the entrance of the market as it is most often swarmed by shoppers. Practically a maze of narrow streets and shops, you’ll need some time to get the full impression. Just be patient, search really, really well, and above all (we can’t stress this enough) bargain the price.

Plaka District

Adjacent to the Acropolis, Plaka is probably the most beautiful and, unfortunately, most touristic area in Athens. Unless you are looking exclusively for touristy things or some awesome blue-and-white aesthetic ceramics, we would probably advise you to skip the shopping here, as it is rather overpriced. Nevertheless, if you are patient enough you will spot a few local designer’s boutiques that are really worth a visit.

Central Market (Varvakeios Agora)

Dating back to 1878, this iconic market is where you’ll find the best food and the best fish in Athens. Also, the most affordable. This market is a sensory delight, with fresh produce and a lot of vocal merchants advertising the virtues of their products. Pro tip one: go early, it’s a place beloved by the Athenians and you know what they say about the early bird!- Pro tip two: try the restaurants inside the market. And be bold, taste a local delicacy such as tripe soup, rumored to be the best in town.

Athinas and Evripidou

We cannot describe the scent and amazing atmosphere of this area, you simply have to experience it yourself. Right next to Varvakeios Agora, you will find the spice streets of Athens, fully packed with all sorts of herbs, aromas, and seasonings. Most of the shops here are historical, passing down from generation to generation. All the owners really know their craft and can give you great suggestions and cooking tips. PS. Do not leave before tasting the famous pastirma beef, an incredible local delicacy.

But how about some clothing and designer items? We got you!

Kolonaki

If you’re a fashionista, you’ve just landed at your favorite place in the city. Kolonaki is home to some of the most exclusive boutiques, high-end fashion brands, and exclusive jewelry shops in Athens. Certainly, be prepared to pay accordingly, but the quality of the fashion here is really second to none.

Ermou Street

By far the most popular street shopping street in Athens. Essentially starting from Syntagma Square and spreading all the way to Monastiraki, Ermou is brim of shops and boutiques, featuring a mix of international fashion brands, including Zara, H&M, and Mango. You will also spot smaller fashion shops, showcasing talented local designers from the thriving Athenan fashion scene.

Golden Hall

This luxurious shopping mall is ideal for those who want to buy the most exclusive brands and find them all together in a prestigious setup. Premium brands and fantastic restaurants for you to enjoy after finishing your shopping.

Artisanal Workshops

Searching for something unique and tailored just for you? Meet the artisanal side of Athens. Take a break from the typical shopping experience and visit some of the numerous workshops in the city. From leather goods to ceramics and jewelry, these studios give you the opportunity to not only buy something truly one of a kind but to support the local artists. to watch skilled craftsmen at work and purchase handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Vintage finds

Retro fever? Yet again, the area around Monastiraki features some highly curated second-hand shops with original silk kimonos, leather goods, and extravagant 80s fashion pieces for a killer price!
